The Science of Happiness

Call it joy, delight, glee or just plain being blissful—we all know that wonderful way of being known as something we all want: happiness. We’ve all felt happiness in some way or another, too—whether it’s when your favorite team wins, when that special someone gazes in your eyes and says they love you, when you complete a more complicated task and feel a sense of accomplishment, or when you’re just having a great day! It feels fantastic to feel happy.

Happiness comes in all forms and, when we know what brings us happiness, we can live from that awareness and choose more of those happy moments in our lives. While we often know (or can become more aware to let ourselves know) what makes us happy, most of us don’t really know the science behind being happy—it is scientific. Knowing what quotients of our emotions are necessary to tune to the radio station of happy helps us all connect with the ability to become happy at any given moment. Often it’s just a matter of understanding it, learning to channel our energy to the tune of happiness, and then using that science to bring more delight to our lives.

Once we know how our body and mind works, it makes the process of becoming happier that much easier. Here are three simple, scientific ways to alter our emotions and become more in tune with our minds for that elated feeling: happiness.

Our Emotions Do Affect Our Health

We all know of course that what we do with our body affects overall health. Want to get in shape? Start exercising. Want to lose a few extra pounds? Cut the junk food, focus on eating healthier and get your body moving. What most of us don’t know is the emotion quotient: how we feel and what emotions we embody, can positively (or, conversely, negatively, depending on the emotion) affect our health as well.

Our hearts pump chemicals to our brains depending on what we are feeling. Simply put, if we think negative thoughts, the physical response of our emotion quotient is sending chemicals from heart to brain that are stress-inducing, which means a decreased immune system and, of course, a negative impact on the way we think and act. When we think positive thoughts though, our emotion quotient elevates. Just like the tune of happy, positive thoughts, so too does the frequency of chemicals change—we receive chemicals that nurture calm in the nervous system. The positive thoughts in our mind facilitate the body to send chemicals for calm, balance and clarity—beautiful, all with a thought, or a series of positive ones.

So when we say, “go to your happy place” when somebody is feeling down, know that it’s not just a phrase; it’s a great way to start the process of not only feeling great, but also improving your health. Your bod delivers stress-relieving, health-increasing chemicals to your body with every positive thought!

There’s a Space Between—In It, the Science of Happy

Not only do our thoughts affect our health and happiness, so does our environment, and vice versa. It’s like a trilogy of positivity, creating the world around you, within you, and a loop that circulates in the science of atomic and sub-atomic that can be created into happiness.

Noticing what’s within you, and around you, is so important. That’s because science now shows us that your ever-growing consciousness of what is happening on all levels is based on molecular structure. It’s our “belief waves“, which actually help create our reality, both internal and external. Your inner reality creates your outer reality, and vice versa—science is now showing us how that works.

Quantum physics—the science of particles both atomic and sub-atomic—gives us good news for happiness: we can make it happen! If you’ve ever felt powerless during a crisis, or limited when faced with a major change, you may be glad to learn that there is a science to pulling yourself out of feeling stuck. Science shows the truth: you are unlimited in your potential, and really can have an impact on your reality. As you change your belief waves, you shape how you want your life and world to be. The best way to do this is by letting yourself believe in what you want the world to be—and according to the science, with your “belief waves,” you can essentially help the world to become, according to what you believe.

It’s like making a to-do list; figure out the steps you need to take to get yourself organized, make deadlines and meet them. Like items on your to-do list, you check them off as achieved. As you connect your belief waves with what you want, it’s like noting the item on the to-do list and, with the energetics of quantum theory, your world and reality transforms to help you place a check beside each item—essentially, happy!

The Placebo Effect Can Help Pump Your Happy

You may have heard of the placebo effect in modern medicine; the same can be true to create more happiness in your life. A placebo effect is when you trick your brain to think something is other than what it is. Let’s say, for example, you have a headache and ask for an Advil. Someone gives you a sugar pill but says it is Advil. The ache in your brain may dissipate even though you haven’t digested anything that technically would help it. A study in 2004 took people with depression, giving half anti-depressants and the other half a saline solution. It showed those who took the saline solution actually produced more dopamine, which helps bring positivity to your brain and, in turn, your life.

You can pump up your happy by using this placebo effect to alter your emotions. Those happy, bliss-filled emotions that make you feel so good can elevate your health—so if you surround yourself with things that make you happy, even while perceptively negative things may be taking place, you can lift yourself up—like the sugar pill that takes care of the headache. As each emotion plays a role in your health, by using the placebo affect, you can not only pump up your happy, but boost your immune system, too.

Health is created in happiness; literally. From buffering the immune system and increasing cellular health in your body with positive emotions to the molecular structure of belief waves to the age old placebo affect—you can use the science of happiness to improve all aspects of your life. We’ve got this life—with joy, delight, it’s so much better. Life is vibrant, vital, happy! Use the tools of science to be aware of your emotions, surroundings and belief waves, and you can have more happy, too.
